What to Consider With Different Classes of RVs: Your 101 Guide

This summer, we’re launching the very first motorized Grand Design RV series: Lineage. In the spirit of adding motorized to the Grand Design family, now is the perfect time to explore the different classes of RVs and discover which one is right for you. From spacious motorhomes to versatile towables, each class offers its own set of features and benefits tailored to different lifestyles and preferences.

When you’re just starting to figure out what RV you want, the first question you should answer is whether you’re more interested in towable RVs or motorhomes. RVers around the world love each style for different reasons.

Towable RVers love

Maximizing their living space (no driving cab in the RV)
Unhitching their tow vehicle and using it at their destination

No engine/motorized components to maintain

Motorized RVers Love

Being able to hop in and go (no towing)

Using their RV (especially Class B) as a second vehicle

No separate tow vehicle to purchase or maintain

Motorized RV Classes

Class A

The largest of the motorized RV classes, Class A RVs resemble buses in stature and are often the most luxurious in design and features. Class As are usually 29 to 45 feet long.

Perfect for you if:

  • You need sleeping space for 6+
  • You’re heading out for longer trips
  • You’re comfortable driving a large RV
  • You’d like to tow a passenger vehicle or larger toy with your RV

Choose another class if:

  • Maneuverability and driving ease matter more
  • Class As are outside of your price range

Class B

The smallest of the motorized RV classes, Class B RVs are typically built on Sprinter van chassis, ranging in length from 19 to 24 feet.

Perfect for you if:

  • You need sleeping space for 1-2
  • Maneuverability is key for you
  • You want your RV to double as a second vehicle

Choose another class if:

  • You need sleeping space for 3+
  • You like extra room indoors
  • Convertible spaces aren’t your thing

Class B+

Class B+ are like the “Goldilocks” between Class B and Class C RVs. They’re built on larger chassis than Class B vans, yet smaller than their Class C counterparts. Class B+ RVs are usually between 23 and 27 feet long.

Perfect for you if:

  • You want Class C space with Class B maneuverability
  • You need sleeping space for 2-4
  • You’d like to tow a toy or small boat with your RV

Choose another class if:

  • You’re looking for a bigger floor plan
  • Convertible spaces aren’t your thing

Class C

Class C RVs typically feature a bunk sleeping space over the cab of the vehicle (as well as a dedicated bedroom inside), and range from 20 to 40 feet long.

Perfect for you if:

  • You need sleeping space for 3-6
  • You want indoor comfort and room to relax
  • You still value maneuverability
  • You’d like to tow a toy or small boat with your RV

Choose another class if:

  • You need sleeping space for 6+
  • You’re looking for maximum indoor space

Super C

Super C RVs are often built on larger diesel truck chassis, which allows for more space and more power slide-outs. Super Cs are usually between 25 and 35 feet long.

Perfect for you if:

  • You need sleeping space for 3-6
  • You want room to spread out indoors
  • You’re heading out on longer trips
  • You’d like to tow a passenger vehicle or larger toy with your RV

Choose another class if:

  • You’ll frequently need to fit into tight spaces

If you’ve been considering going motorized, and all you needed were a few good reasons to take the leap, you’ll find plenty of them in the new Lineage line.
